Bandits win push win streak to seven games

BROOKINGS – The Brookings Bandits won their seventh-straight game on Tuesday night as they beat the Marshall (Minnesota), 8-1.

It was the second time that the Bandits beat Marshall in three days as they beat them in the championship game of the of the Wood Bat Tournament in Marshall on Sunday.

Brookings scored two runs in the first inning of Tuesday night’s game. Breck Hirrschoff walked to start the inning and Parker Winghart followed with a walk as well. Both runners would advance on a wild pitch and Justin Cofell then hit them home with a single to center.

Neither team scored in the second or the third. The Bandits then added two runs in the fifth. Nathan Lease hit a lead off triple and would later score on a two-out single from Josh Devine to make it 4-1.  

Trey Svennes and Austin Clark then both drew walks to load the bases. Hirrschoff followed that with a single that allowed Svennes to score and make it 5-1. Winghart struck out to end the inning and Brookings was unable to put more runs across the board.

Marshall finally got on the board in the top of the fifth. A Rowe walked with two outs and then crossed home on a wild pitch to make it 5-1 going into the bottom of the fifth.

Brookings responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Ashton Witte walked with two outs and Henry Hammrich pinch ran for him. Hammrich then scored on a Payton Theodosopulos single. 

Devine followed that with  a double and Theodosopulos scored. Devine then scored on a wild pitch  to make it 8-1 going into the sixth and that would be the final.

Zach Struck pitched a complete game for Brookings. He gave up one earned run on four hits, with three strikeouts and two walks.

Hirrschoff and Cofell were each 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Devine was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Theodosopulos was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Nathan Lease was 1-for-4.

Brookings is now 14-8 on the season and plays a doubleheader at home against Huron tonight. The first game of the doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. at Bob Shelden Field.
