Bandits lose two games in St. Cloud Tournament

BROOKINGS – Brookings fell in the first two games of the St. Cloud Chutes Tournament in St. Cloud, Minn. The Bandits dropped a close the first game against Maple Grove (Minn.) In the second game they were shutout by Rogers (Minn.).

Both teams went scoreless in the first two innings. The Bandits broke the stalemate by scoring a run in the third inning. Jackson Krogman got on base with a single to lead off the inning. Tyler Kruetner then hit him home with a one out double.

Neither team scored in the fourth inning. Brookings would add three more runs in the top of the fifth inning. With one out, Cole Mahlum hit a single and Kruetner hit a double to give the Bandits runners on second and third. Justin Devine hit both Mahlum and Kruetner home with a double. He later scored after a single from Jacob Schoon to make it 4-0.

Maple Grove would storm back and take the lead in the bottom of the inning. They led off the inning with three walks and one hit by pitch. Jeremy Klick then hit a three RBI triple to tie the game 4-4 with no outs. With two outs, Klick scored on an error and Maple Grove had a 5-4 lead heading into the sixth inning.

The Bandits would go down one-two-three in both the sixth and the seventh inning to give Maple Grove the victory. Brookings out-hit Maple Grove 8-2, but they had two errors and seven walks.

Rhett Zelinsky started the game for the Bandits. He pitched 4 1/3 innings and gave up five runs, four earned, on two hits with no strikeouts and five walks. Christian Mediger pitched 1 2/3 innings and gave no runs on no hits with no strikeouts and two walks.

Devine went 1-for-4 with two RBIs. Kruetner went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Schoon went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Zelinsky went 2-for-3. Krogman and Mahlum each went 1-for-3.

Brookings was unable to get their bats going in the second game of the tournament. They had six hits but were unable to produce any runs against Rogers. 

It was a pitcher’s duel in the first four innings of the game as neither team was able to score. Rogers got on the board in the fifth inning when B Hegarty stole home. 

They scored three more in the sixth inning. With one out, R Olson got on base with a single. A Double from R Daun doubled putting runners on second and third. G McLaughlin hit a two RBI triple and B Hegarty. McLaughlin scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-0. 

They did not play the seventh inning, so that was the final score.

Wright pitched 5 2/3 innings for the Bombers. He gave up four runs on eight hits with nine strikeouts and two walks.

Kruetner went 3-for-3 and Shepardson went 1-for-1. Wright went 1-for-2 and Devine went 1-for-3.
