HURON – The fourth-seeded Bandits bounced back from an 8-7 opening-round loss to fifth-seeded Huron with a 7-0 defeat of second-seeded Watertown in an elimination game at the Region 1A Legion Baseball Tournament on Tuesday.

Bandits beat Watertown following loss to Huron at Region 1A

HURON – The fourth-seeded Bandits bounced back from an 8-7 opening-round loss to fifth-seeded Huron with a 7-0 defeat of second-seeded Watertown in an elimination game at the Region 1A Legion Baseball Tournament on Tuesday.

In other action, third-seeded Aberdeen defeated Watertown 7-1 and top-seeded Renner toppled Huron 15-0 in seven innings.

Renner faces Aberdeen today at 1 p.m. Brookings (13-20) takes on Huron again in an elimination game at 4 p.m. The Renner/Aberdeen loser plays the Brookings/Huron winner at 7 p.m.

The championship is Thursday.

Note: The region champion and runner-up automatically qualify for the Class A State Tournament. The third-place finisher earns a spot in the wild card play-in game.

Jacob Devine pitched eight innings of one-hit ball while also contributing two hits and three RBIs at the plate to help Post 74 stay alive.

He struck out seven batters, walked two and hit two.

Jacob Schoon singled to open the fourth, moved to second on Justin Devine’s sacrifice bunt and scored on Jacob Devine’s two-out single to get the Bandits on the board.

Brookings took control with five runs in the seventh.

Akren Prodoehl led off the big frame with a double and Chris Lerdal singled. Cody Niklason came through with an RBI hit. Jacob Schoon walked with one out.

Justin Devine delivered a two-run double to make it 4-0. Tyler Kreutner then walked.

Jacob Devine’s two-run single put the Bandits on top 6-0.

In the eighth, Niklason had a one-out single, advanced on Brandon Nelson’s hit and scored on Justin Devine’s two-out single to provide for the final margin.

Justin Devine went 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Niklason, who scored two runs, and Lerdal added a pair of hits apiece. Schoon scored twice.

Lerdal pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to close out the game.

Bailey Neuhauser took the loss after giving up four runs on eight hits and four walks with five strikeouts in six plus innings.

No. 4 hitter Micah Kauffman recorded Watertown’s lone hit – a single with two outs in the sixth.

Post 7 rallied from an early deficit and then held off Post 74 down the stretch for the opening-round win.

The Bandits struck first with a pair of runs in the first inning.

Jacob Devine drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on Jameson Meyer’s sacrifice bunt. Akren Prodoehl walked.

Chris Lerdal followed with an RBI double and Cody Niklason tallied a run-scoring single to make it 2-0.

Huron got on the board in the fourth as Ricky Struble singled with one out, advanced to second on Bryce Stephen’s single, took third on a flyout and scored on a balk.

Walker Shiltz opened the fifth with a base on balls, move to second on Matty Katz’s sacrifice bunt and scored on a Jake Wehde single to tie things up at 2-2.

Brookings countered with two runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Meyer singled and Prodoehl doubled to get it going.

Meyer scampered home on a wild pitch and Niklason scored Prodoehl with a bunt – his second RBI of the game – to put Post 74 on top 4-2.

Huron grabbed its first lead in the top of the sixth.

Parker Dejean and Shiltz sandwiched one-out singles around a Deion Waddle walk.

Dejean scored on an error, Waddle sprinted home on a passed ball and Shiltz scored on a wild pitch to put Post 7 ahead 5-4.

Justin Devine opened the bottom of the sixth with a walk and Tyler Kreutner singled. Jacob Devine hit into a fielder’s choice, which allowed Justin Devine to score to tie the game at 5-all.

The hosts took the lead for good with a two-out rally in the top of the seventh.

Struble was hit by a pitch. Stephen followed with an RBI double and scored on a Dejean hit soon thereafter to make it 7-5.

Wehde and Lein singled to get the eighth inning underway. Following a double play, Struble came through with a run-scoring hit to push the advantage to 8-5.

In the bottom of the eighth, Justin Devine drew a leadoff base on balls and Jacob Devine drew a one-out walk. Meyer was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

Justin Devine scored on a wild pitch, before Prodoehl walked to again load the bases.

Lerdal picked up his second RBI of the day when he drove in Jacob Devine with a fielder’s choice to pull the Bandits within 8-7.

Brandon Nelson drew a two-out walk in the ninth but a groundout ended the game.

Dejean pitched seven innings to earn the win, giving up five runs on six hits and six walks with a pair of strikeouts.

Struble gave up two runs on three walks in one-third of an inning.

Chipper Shillingstad closed the door down the stretch, surrendering just one walk with a strikeout over the final 1 2/3 innings.

Wehde finished 3-for-4. Struble and Shiltz were both 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while Lien was also 2-for-4. Stephen and Dejean added 2-for-5 performances at the plate.

Meyer took the loss after allowing five runs – four earned – on seven hits and three walks with five strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings.

Lerdal surrendered three runs on seven hits and a walk with one strikeout over the next 2 2/3 frames. Drew Cole retired all three batters he faced in the ninth, including one by strikeout.

Prodoehl, Jacob Devine and Justin Devine each scored twice.
