VOLGA – A baler and bales of cornstalks caught fire southwest of Volga Friday, causing $35,200 in damage, according to the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.
The Vermeer 605 Super M baler fire was reported at 4:01 p.m. Friday and occurred near 461st Avenue and 213th Street, Assistant Sheriff Scott Sebring said.
“The Brookings County Sheriff’s Office along with the Volga and Sinai Fire Departments were dispatched to the above location after a baler had caught fire,” Sebring said.
“Crews found the baler was being used to collect corn stalks when it caught fire. The operator was able to detach the baler before fire spread to the tractor,” Sebring said.
“The cause of the fire is unknown. In addition to the baler, four bales of cornstalks had also caught fire. The loss of the incident is estimated at $35,200,” Sebring said.
