Area GBB: Dolphins win two games, Redhawks one

Estelline/Hendricks earned a win over Stanley County at the Redfield Holiday tournament, and Deubrook Area picked up two wins including one at the Dakota State University Girls’ Basketball Classic, while Brookings dropped a Friday night game at Brandon Valley in area girls’ basketball action.

Friday

 Estelline/Hendricks 49, Stanley County 28

REDFIELD – Kate Wegner scored 15 points including three triples, and Kenzy Beare added 14 points, as Estelline/Hendricks picked up a decisive win over the Lady Buffaloes of Stanley County, 49-28, at the Redfield Holiday Classic on Saturday in Redfield.

Emma Pierce and Brooke Johnson each scored six points, while Rachel Hexem added five.

Stanley County was led by Taylee Stroup with 10 points.

The Redhawks trailed 12-11 after one quarter but would hold the Lady Buffaloes to a mere two points in the second quarter as Estelline/Hendricks led 22-14 at halftime. They would outscore Stanley County 27-14 in the second half to close out the win.

Each team recorded 20 rebounds, with the Redhawks’ Maddie Ebbers posting a game-high seven.

Estelline/Hendricks (4-5) plays host to Great Plains Lutheran tomorrow night in Estelline.

 Deubrook Area 58, Lake Preston 27

WHITE – Deubrook Area used balanced scoring to pick up a win over Lake Preston on Friday in White.

Kadence Bowne, Brooke Koppatschek, and Skyla Petersen each scored nine points, and Emma Vandermeer added eight, as the Dolphins opened up a 20-5 lead after one quarter and went on to claim the win.

Bowne also added five rebounds, while Vandermeer had four assists and a pair of steals.

Lake Preston was led by Faith Steffensen with 11 points and nine rebounds, with Marissa Rober scoring six points and Ava Malone adding four.

Lake Preston (3-4, 1-4 DVC) hosts Iroquois/Doland tonight at 6:30 p.m.

 Brandon Valley 62, Brookings 43

The host Lynx outscored Brookings 34-19 in the second half, including a 23-9 third quarter, as Brandon Valley defeated Brookings on Friday night.

Landree Wilson led the Bobcats with 15 points, Ainsley Shelsta added 10 points, and Logan Smidt had eight points.

No other Bobcat scored more than two points.

Brandon Valley’s Hilary Behrens poured in 29 points for the Lynx, with Kylie Foss adding 13 points.

Both teams were nearly even at the free throw line as Brandon Valley shot 61 percent, 8-of-13, while Brookings shot 60 percent, 9-of-15.

The Lynx won the battle on the boards, 26-24.

The Bobcats turned the ball over 21 times in the game to just eight for the host Lynx.

Brookings (1-4) heads north to Aberdeen on Thursday for a matchup with the Golden Eagles.

In the sophomore game, Brandon Valley won 47-22. Brinleigh Mack led the Bobcats with nine points.

The Bobcats won the JV game 42-28. Sophia Hammrich paced Brookings with 18 points while Sofia Dvergsten added 10 points.

Saturday

 Deubrook Area 58, Rapid City Christian 34

MADISON – Carley Landmark, Miranda Moravetz, and Bowne each scored in double-figures as the Deubrook Area Dolphins picked up a convincing win over Rapid City Christian, 58-34, at the Dakota State University Girls’ Basketball Classic held on Saturday in Madison.

Landmark scored 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead Deubrook Area; she was awarded game MVP for her efforts.

Bowne added 11 points, five rebounds, and three steals, while Moravetz scored 10 points and grabbed five rebounds.

Emma Sheffield chipped in with nine points.

Olivia Kieffer scored 18 points to lead the Lady Comets.

The Dolphins led 20-5 after one quarter and were never threatened.

Deubrook Area shot 85 percent at the free throw line, 17-of-20, while Rapid City Christian made just 5-of-15 at the charity stripe.

Both teams struggled from deep as Deubrook area shot just 3-of-13 and Rapid City Christian made just 5 triples on 28 attempts.

Deubrook Area (5-2) takes on the Redhawks of Estelline/Hendricks on Thursday in Estelline.
