BROOKINGS – Shelby Meyer, a 2020 South Dakota State University graduate, is holding an alumna exhibit in the Grove Hall’s Ritz Gallery. The exhibit, Mirrored Contrast, opened Monday and runs through Jan. 29.
A Brookings native, Meyer earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in studio art with specialties in printmaking, ceramics and art education.
The exhibit features large-scale carborundum collagraph prints, intaglio and carborundum collagraph prints and earthenware ceramic sculptures.
“It’s a great opportunity and a little bit unexpected,” said Meyer, who had one planned for the spring semester but it was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “It was a little different being back on campus and working through the process of setting up an exhibit, such as where to park and when is the building available.”
Meyer, who will be teaching photography and art at Brookings High School shortly, has an exhibit planned with the Brookings Arts Council in April.
“I create imagery inspired by the human body, drawing from life and imagination to illustrate different perspectives and stereotypes that either reinforce or contradict the human experience. Distorting the body creates a juxtaposition between what is seen and what is felt, mimicking the tension that comes with being a young woman in today’s society,” she said.
Meyer has featured work in several joint exhibits, including the 2018 and 2019 SDSU Student Juried Shows. Her work won the 2019 event. Her display finished second at the 2020 Fine Art Open at the Brookings Arts Council.
Grove Hall is located south of the SDSU University Student Union between Mathews and Brown residence halls. Admission is free. The Ritz Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (closed weekends and holidays). Parking is available in the University Student Union lot.
