Ag Relations Committee awards annual ag scholarship recipients

BROOKINGS – The Ag Relations Committee of the Brookings Area Chamber of Commerce announced the recipients of the 2021 Ag Relations Scholarships.

The Ag Relations Committee’s mission is more than promoting the agricultural industry. It also works to raise funds to support and provide local youth with scholarship backing.

These scholarships allow students to apply themselves in a secondary education setting, learning how to best serve the beloved industry and to ensure local youth have access to this opportunity.

Unable to have the annual banquet to fundraise for these scholarships, the committee took to making phone calls to see if past supporters of the banquet would have interest in donating to the scholarship fund. Without the gracious donations from Hurley & Associates, Farm Credit Service of America, TruCount CPA, Millborn Seeds, Great Western Bank, South Dakota Soybean Processors, and the Brookings Conservation District, this opportunity would not have been possible. Thanks to these donors, accessible funding for students to continue their education is made available.

The $1,000 high school scholarship was awarded to Gabe Gullikson of Flandreau. Gullikson is currently finishing his senior year at Flandreau High School and will attend SDSU in the fall to pursue a degree in ag business. The $1,000 higher education scholarship was awarded to Miguel Mena, who is currently a junior studying agronomy.

Charlie Stephenson, 2021 Ag Relations Committee chairman, said, “These scholarships are a great way to reward students for their hard work and assist them in their continued education.

The Ag Resource Teacher grant allows students access to additional resources and education they otherwise would not receive.” He added, “The opportunity to help students and teachers financially every year is a fantastic way to impact the communities in which we serve.”
