Access changes for aquatic center parking lot

BROOKINGS – Annual overlay and concrete projects have begun for the 2021 construction season.

A portion of the work has affected access to the Hillcrest Aquatic Center parking lots, the City of Brookings announced Tuesday.

Individuals can access the main parking lot north of the Hillcrest tennis courts from the west on Fifth Street. The larger parking lot to the south of the tennis courts can be accessed by driving through the Hillcrest Elementary School driveway.

During construction, the sidewalk will be removed along the east side of 15th Avenue. While the sidewalk is removed, the city asks that people walk through the grass near the tennis courts to get to the pool.

The project will include installing new curb and gutter, sidewalk ramps, and a new 8-foot-wide shared-use sidewalk on the east side of 15th Avenue. The work is scheduled to be complete by the time school opens in the fall.

“We would like to remind the public to be cautious when driving or walking through the project area, especially around work areas under construction,” a City of Brookings press release says. “We appreciate everyone’s patience during the project and we are looking forward to the reconstructed Third Street and 15th Avenue corridor.”
