BROOKINGS – The state on Tuesday reported 1,341 new COVID-19 cases and six new deaths in South Dakota. 

Thirty-three of the new cases have been reported in Brookings County.

Tuesday’s data reflects case numbers over the four-day holiday weekend, from 1 p.m. Thursday through 1 p.m. Monday.

Brookings County cases have risen to 5,366 total cases (29 new confirmed and four new probable): 5,175 of those people have recovered (29 new) with 150 active cases (up by four) and 41 deaths (no change). A total of 163 people in the county have been hospitalized at some point (no change), the state reported. 

The Brookings hospital has three COVID-19 occupied hospital beds, according to the South Dakota Department of Health website. The county is in the “high” community spread category. 

The number of COVID-19 cases in South Dakota rose to 166,208 (1,120 new confirmed and 221 new probable) as of midday Tuesday, according to the SDDOH. 

Of the statewide cases, 6,778 are classified as active (down by 475 from Monday). As of Tuesday, 157,096 people have recovered (1,810 new), 8,446 South Dakotans have been hospitalized at some point (84 new), 243 people are currently hospitalized (up by nine) for transmission-based precautions, and 2,334 people with COVID have died (six new).

The new deaths, four women and two men, are being reported in Brown, Hand, Lawrence, Lincoln, Meade and Pennington counties. The age ranges of the deceased are one 70-79 years and five 80 years or older.

The SDDOH website reported midday Tuesday that 998,488 doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered to 476,860 people in South Dakota, as reported to the S.D. Immunization Information System. 

In Brookings County, 39,155 vaccine doses have been administered to 18,783 people, the SDDOH website reports.

The SDDOH reports 64.3% of the state population age 5 and older has received at least one dose of a COVID vaccine from the state or federal allocation, 53.5% have completed their vaccination series, and 14.9% have received a booster dose.
