936 new COVID-19 cases, 15 new deaths reported in South Dakota

BROOKINGS – The state on Wednesday reported 936 new COVID-19 cases and 15 new deaths in South Dakota. 

Twenty-three of the new cases have been reported in Brookings County.

Brookings County cases have risen to 5,389 total cases (22 new confirmed and one new probable): 5,179 of those people have recovered (four new) with 169 active cases (up by 19) and 41 deaths (no change). A total of 163 people in the county have been hospitalized at some point (no change), the state reported. 

The Brookings hospital has two COVID-19 occupied hospital beds, according to the South Dakota Department of Health website. The county is in the “high” community spread category. 

The number of COVID-19 cases in South Dakota rose to 167,144 (682 new confirmed and 254 new probable) as of midday Wednesday, according to the SDDOH. 

Of the statewide cases, 7,222 are classified as active (up by 444 from Tuesday). As of Wednesday, 157,573 people have recovered (477 new), 8,468 South Dakotans have been hospitalized at some point (22 new), 249 people are currently hospitalized (up by six) for transmission-based precautions, and 2,349 people with COVID have died (15 new).

The new deaths, six women and nine men, are being reported in Campbell, Codington (2), Corson, Dewey, Lawrence, Meade, Minnehaha (4), Pennington (2), Tripp and Yankton counties. The age ranges of the deceased are one 40-49 years, five 50-59 years, three 60-69 years, four 70-79 years and two 80 years or older.

The SDDOH website reported midday Wednesday that 1,001,864 doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered to 477,411 people in South Dakota, as reported to the S.D. Immunization Information System. 

In Brookings County, 39,289 vaccine doses have been administered to 18,809 people, the SDDOH website reports.

The SDDOH reports 64.3% of the state population age 5 and older has received at least one dose of a COVID vaccine from the state or federal allocation, 53.6% have completed their vaccination series, and 15.1% have received a booster dose.
