225 new COVID-19 cases, one new death reported in South Dakota Wednesday

BROOKINGS – The state is reporting 225 new COVID-19 cases and one new death in South Dakota Wednesday.

Twenty-two of the new cases are in Brookings County.

Brookings County cases have risen to 4,048 total cases (six new confirmed and 16 new probable): 3,821 of those people have recovered (18 new), with 190 active cases (up by four) and 37 deaths (no change). A total of 13,053 people (42 new) have tested negative in Brookings County, and 146 people (no change) in the county have been hospitalized at some point, the state reported.

There are two COVID-19 occupied hospital beds at the Brookings Hospital, the DOH website reported Wednesday.

The county is in the “substantial” community spread category.

The number of COVID-19 cases in South Dakota rose to 120,379 (225 new – 166 confirmed plus 59 probable) as of midday Wednesday, according to the South Dakota Department of Health.

Of the statewide cases, 2,391 are classified as active (down by 48 from Tuesday). As of Wednesday, 116,040 people have recovered (272 new), 7,168 South Dakotans have been hospitalized at some point (10 new), 113 people are currently hospitalized (up by seven) for transmission-based precautions, and 1,948 people have died (one new).

The SDDOH website reports 334,765 people (735 new) have tested negative in South Dakota.

The new death was a woman in her 70s from Turner County.

Increases in positive cases Wednesday include, but are not limited to, 22 in Brookings County, nine in Brown, 21 in Codington, 13 in Lincoln, 68 in Minnehaha and 20 in Pennington.

The SDDOH website reported midday Wednesday that 508,407 doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered to 306,642 people in South Dakota, as reported to the S.D. Immunization Information System. 

Doses administered by Indian Health Services, Veterans Affairs Medical Centers, Department of Defense and Bureau of Prisons are not included in the state’s vaccine count.

In Brookings County, 18,181 vaccine doses have been administered to 11,544 people, the SDDOH website reports. As of Wednesday, 32.9% of the total county population has received at least one vaccine dose, and 40.8% of those 16 years and older in Brookings County have received at least one vaccine dose.

Fifty-one percent of the state population has received at least one dose of a COVID vaccine from the state or federal allocation, according to the SDDOH website, and more than 36% of the state population has completed its vaccination series.
