BROOKINGS – The 20th Street South reconstruction project between Main Avenue South and Rio Grande Avenue is scheduled to start on Monday, July 29.

Starting Monday, the first phase of 20th Street South between Half Moon Road/Larkspur Ridge Road and Main Avenue South will be closed to through traffic. The public should utilize the detour routes as shown on the map at right. The streets west of Half Moon Road/Larkspur Ridge Drive will remain open to traffic during the first phase of construction.

The contractor will start the project with grinding the existing asphalt roadway and compacting the granular material. They will then proceed with installing water and sanitary sewer lines and storm sewer. After the underground utilities are installed, they will begin street grading and construction.

The segment between Half Moon Road/Larkspur Ridge Drive and Main Avenue South is scheduled to be open to traffic by November 2019.

The City will hold public meetings for anyone interested in project updates. The first public meeting will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 14, at the South Main Fire Station, 319 26th St. S., Brookings.

“We would like to remind the public to be cautious when driving or walking through the project area, especially around work areas under construction. The City appreciate everyone’s patience during the project,” a City of Brookings press release says.

Questions may be directed to the Cory Mackendanz at 320-295-6967, project inspector, or the City Engineering Department at 692-6629.
