187 new COVID-19 cases, one new death reported in South Dakota Monday

BROOKINGS – The state is reporting 187 new COVID-19 cases and one new death in South Dakota Monday.

Twenty of the new cases are in Brookings County.

Brookings County cases have risen to 4,005 total cases (five new confirmed and 15 new probable): 3,789 of those people have recovered (13 new), with 179 active cases (up by seven) and 37 deaths (no change). A total of 12,975 people (35 new) have tested negative in Brookings County, and 146 people (one new) in the county have been hospitalized at some point, the state reported.

There is one COVID-19 occupied hospital bed at the Brookings Hospital, the DOH website reported Monday.

The county is in the “substantial” community spread category.

The number of COVID-19 cases in South Dakota rose to 119,892 (187 new – 135 confirmed plus 52 probable) as of midday Monday, according to the South Dakota Department of Health.

Of the statewide cases, 2,425 are classified as active (up by 12 from Saturday). As of Monday, 115,520 people have recovered (174 new), 7,136 South Dakotans have been hospitalized at some point (20 new), 96 people are currently hospitalized (down by six) for transmission-based precautions, and 1,947 people have died (one new).

The SDDOH website reports 333,370 people (578 new) have tested negative in South Dakota.

The new death was a man in his 60s.

Increases in positive cases Monday include, but are not limited to, 20 in Brookings County, eight in Brown, 16 in Codington, 20 in Lincoln, 58 in Minnehaha and five in Pennington.

The SDDOH website reported midday Monday that 500,996 doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered to 303,040 people in South Dakota, as reported to the S.D. Immunization Information System. 

Doses administered by Indian Health Services, Veterans Affairs Medical Centers, Department of Defense and Bureau of Prisons are not included in the state’s vaccine count.

In Brookings County, 18,000 vaccine doses have been administered to 11,458 people, the SDDOH website reports. As of Monday, 32.7% of the total county population has received at least one vaccine dose, and 40.5% of those 16 years and older in Brookings County have received at least one vaccine dose, according to Brookings Health System.

More than 50% of the state population has received at least one dose of a COVID vaccine from the state or federal allocation, according to the SDDOH website, and more than 35% of the state population has completed its vaccination series.
