BROOKINGS – The state is reporting 277 new COVID-19 cases and no new deaths in South Dakota Wednesday.

Twenty of the new cases are in Brookings County.

Brookings County cases have risen to 3,329 total cases (seven new confirmed and 13 new probable): 3,078 of those people have recovered (32 new), with 219 active cases (down by 12) and 32 deaths (no change). A total of 10,642 people (30 new) have tested negative in Brookings County, and 115 people (one new) in the county have been hospitalized at some point, the state reported.

There is one COVID-19 occupied hospital bed at the Brookings Hospital, the DOH website reported Wednesday.

Brookings County remains in the “substantial” community spread category.

The number of COVID-19 cases in South Dakota rose to 106,063 (277 new – 200 confirmed plus 77 probable) as of midday Wednesday, according to the South Dakota Department of Health.

Of the statewide cases, 4,103 are classified as active (down by 129 from Tuesday). As of Wednesday, 100,293 people have recovered (406 new), 6,109 South Dakotans have been hospitalized at some point (17 new), 195 people are currently hospitalized (down by five) for transmission-based precautions, and 1,667 people have died (no change).

The SDDOH website reports 287,280 people (741 new) have tested negative in South Dakota.

Increases in positive cases Wednesday included, but are not limited to, 20 in Brookings County, 33 in Lincoln, 52 in Minnehaha and 47 in Pennington.

The counties with the highest total case counts are Minnehaha (26,509), Pennington (12,115), Lincoln (7,281), Brown (4,797) and Codington (3,686).

The SDDOH website reported midday Wednesday that 58,456 doses of a COVID-19 vaccine have been administered to 48,491 people in South Dakota.

In Brookings County, 1,555 vaccine doses have been administered to 1,337 people.

The figures released by the state Department of Health do not include individuals who are asymptomatic or have symptoms of the coronavirus but are not being tested.

For most people, the coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia, and death.
