BROOKINGS COUNTY — Deer were the culprits in a pair of early morning crashes on June 1 in the Volga area that sent one person to a hospital for treatment.
“Deer are active during this and all times of year,” Brookings County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Sgt. Manny Langstraat told The Brookings Register. “Reduce distractions, don’t speed, wear safety gear/seatbelts and pay attention.”
Motorcycle destroyed
The first crash involved a motorcycle driven by Josue Vargas, 24, of Hayti that occurred at 3:05 a.m. on U.S. Highway 14 near 461st Avenue west of Volga.
He was treated and released at the scene after his 2017 Yamaha YZFR6 struck the deer, sustaining an estimated $4,500 in damage and resulting in a total loss, according to a news release from the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.
Vargas was wearing full safety gear, including a helmet, Langstraat said.
Other responding agencies were the Volga Fire Department and Brookings Ambulance, and the sheriff’s office is continuing to investigate the incident, Langstraat wrote.
Brookings woman injured
The second incident occurred at 4:58 a.m. after Shannon Schut, 62, of Brookings swerved to miss a deer on U.S. 14 near 466th Avenue between Brookings and Volga, leading to a rollover.
Schut was taken to the emergency room at Brookings Health System with unknown injuries, Langstraat wrote in the news release.
The vehicle Schut was driving, a 2002 Dodge Ram 1500, sustained an estimated $4,600 in damage and was destroyed.
The Volga Fire Department and Brookings Ambulance responded to the incident, which is being investigated by the sheriff’s office, Langstraat wrote.
