Roger DeGroot has over 40 years of proven leadership in education, serving as a K-8 principal and school superintendent. The final eight years of his educational career were spent leading the Brookings School District as superintendent, after which he continued his service on the Brookings School Board. During a very challenging period when state aid to education was cut by 8%, Dr. DeGroot’s experience, steady leadership, and consensus-building skills ensured our district successfully did more with less.
That deep expertise is exactly what he has brought to Pierre. For the past four years, Roger has served our community with distinction in the State Legislature, where his role on the House Education Committee has allowed him to directly shape policies affecting our schools and ensure local voices are heard.
The DeGroots have been proud residents of Brookings for over 18 years, and having known Roger since the day he arrived, I can personally attest to his unwavering integrity, professionalism, and leadership. He has been incredibly active in building strong relationships with our District 7 leaders across agriculture, private business, local government, state leadership, and SDSU administration. He deeply understands the vital connection between secondary and post-secondary education and workforce development. He is dedicated to solving economic and workforce challenges not just here in Brookings, but across South Dakota.
