VOLGA — Sioux Valley graduate Michaela Gerasch has a way with numbers and she is hoping that will lead her to a successful career.
She is the daughter of Sara and Ernie Gerasch and has joined the South Dakota Army National Guard.
Gerasch is currently in a recruitment sustaining program unit based out of Sioux Falls. This is a unit for Guard members who have not completed their training for their jobs in the Guard.
She went to Fort Leonard Wood for basic training, where she learned basic soldiering skills, last summer. She will return there in August to complete advanced individual training for her military occupational specialty as a 12C — a bridge crew member. It’s part of the engineering series, working with the combat engineers. Upon completion of AIT she will serve with the 200th Engineering Company, based in Chamberlain, a unit that specializes in the building of temporary floating bridges for the military.
Gerasch plans to become a Jackrabbit after completing her Guard training. She will enroll in the spring semester at South Dakota State University, where she will pursue a bachelor’s degree in accounting.
Her career goals after earning her degree include using her aptitude with numbers as a certified public accountant.
“I want to help people with their finances — get everything in line. I really love numbers. I love the problems solving part of it so that’s my goal right now,” she said.
She took an accounting course as a sophomore and enjoyed it so much she decided to make it her career.
“I really like the problem solving. It’s so organized. It’s very black and white. I like figuring out the equations and finding out where stuff goes. I like the organization and numbers,” she said.
Gerasch was involved in many activities during her high school years at Sioux Valley. She participated in volleyball, National Honor Society, theater, yearbook, choir and oral interpretation.
