BROOKINGS — The Brookings leg of the South Dakota Special Olympics “Run Across South Dakota” took place on May 11 with more than a dozen youth and Brookings law enforcement personnel.
According to former BPD Chief Jeff Miller, currently acting as the South Dakota Law Enforcement Torch Run director, the run has raised money and awareness for the special Olympics since 1988 in the state. There are more than 3,000 special Olympians in South Dakota, Miller said and while most identify with summer games, special Olympians compete year-round.
This year, 10 officers and two core runner-athletes comprise the Olympic chain, passing the torch from one to another. Two routes will cross South Dakota from the north and south, covering 34 cities in four days.
This year’s run will conclude in Spearfish with opening ceremonies set for 7 p.m. May 14.
