Mayor proclaims Margaret Denton Day in Brookings

Family and friends celebrated the 100th birthday of longtime Brookings resident Margaret Denton on April 12. The celebration included Brookings Mayor Oepke “Ope” Niemeyer, who delivered a proclamation declaring April 15 as Margaret Denton Day.

Niemeyer mentioned Denton as well at the Brookings City Council meeting on April 14.

“Some of her legacy is being part of creating a safe place for domestic abuse (victims), and she is part of what is Margo’s Place now,” he said. “I’d like to put kudos out to Margaret Denton for being one of those people who had the foresight to create a safe place to begin with.”

Margo’s Place was formerly known as the Brookings Domestic Abuse Shelter, and it was renamed in honor of the late Margo Dempsey, its longtime executive director.
