TEA — Brookings swept Tea Area, 2-1 and 8-0, in a high school baseball doubleheader here Wednesday.
The Bobcats bounced back from a season-opening loss to Brandon Valley with two strong performances.
Jay Harris rapped a two-run single in the sixth inning for the game-winning hit in the opener. Tea broke a scoreless tie with a single tally in the fifth before the two-run Brookings sixth frame.
Andrew Heinze picked up the pitching win, the southpaw allowing two hits and 4 2/3 innings, striking out four and walking one. Jude Meendering earned save.
Losing pitcher Landyn Johnson gave up four hits in six innings, striking out eight and walking four.
Talon Hyde was 2-for-3 at the plate for the Bobcats, while Harris got the big hit from the No. 7 spot in the order. The Bobcats stole four bases.
Brookings blanked Tea, 8-0, in the nightcap, ringing up five runs in the second inning. Meendering drove in three runs with a double and single and Jase Bauer added a two-run double in the big second frame.
Noah Lease was the winning pitcher, surrendering just two hits and striking out six over four innings. Baker Hanson came on in relief, fanning six in three innings pitched. Ethan Knettel took the loss.
Meendering was 2-for-3 from the No. 9 spot in the order, while Ben Schulte tacked on two hits for the Bobcats. Brookings also drew seven walks and played errorless ball in the field.
Their home opener is Tuesday, April 14, with a doubleheader against Sioux Falls Lincoln.
