BROOKINGS — Three individuals have stepped up and offered to serve the community as part of the Brookings School District’s board of education.
There is a one-year term up for grabs and the only person to file for that spot is Wes Tschetter. Tschetter, who served as chief financial officer at South Dakota State University, currently holds a seat on the board. He will fill the term that opened when Keli Books stepped down to pursue an opportunity at the University of Nebraska-Kearney. Teresa Binkley was appointed to that seat, but she decided not to seek to serve the remainder of that term.
The other open seat on the board is currently held by Tschetter, and its term ends this year.
Two women — Marcy Dierks and Kelsey Bowman — will vie for that three-year seat in the school election on June 2.
Originally from the Chicago area, Dierks moved to Brookings in 2008 and has lived here for 16.5 of the last 18 years. She currently serves as master teacher of science for Northern State University’s Center for Statewide E-learning. She also works part time with Interim Health Care.
She received a bachelor’s degree from St. Olaf College in Minnesota and a master’s degree from NSU.
She taught science at Brookings High School for nine years and has also worked at the Boys & Girls Club and Advance in Brookings.
Bowman moved to Brookings in 2005 to attend SDSU. She graduated in 2008 with a degree in economics.
She currently lives in Brookings with her husband Matt and their son, Breck, a first grader at Medary Elementary. Previously she served as assistant business manager for the Brookings School District. In 2019 she started her own accounting firm, KB Consulting.
She currently splits her time between work at the accounting firm and being a mother.
