BROOKINGS — The petition deadline is nearing for those seeking a seat on the Brookings School District Board of Education
In her report to the board at its March 9 meeting, District Director of Business Services Stacey VanBeek gave the board a reminder that the deadline for those wishing to file petitions is near. Those who want to run for a seat on the board must file petitions must be filed at the school district administrative office by 5 p.m. on March 24.
Petitions can be obtained at the district administration building or the secretary of state’s website.
There will be two seats open in the June election. One will be for a one-year term to fill the remainder of Keli Books’ term. Books left the board in December. The board selected Teresa Binkley, a former board to fill the seat vacated by Books. In a December interview with the Register Binkley said that she did not plan to run for office again, but she would not rule it out. The other contest is for a three-year term for the seat currently held by Wes Tschetter.
The school election will be held in conjunction with the state’s primary election. Traditionally the school elections were held in the first week in April. But the state government mandated that school elections be moved to coincide with either the June primary election or the November general election. In December the board opted to have its elections in June.
This will be the first June election for the school board.
