Two of the top three seeds fall in Class B quarterfinals

BROOKINGS – Two of the top three seeds in Class B went down in the quarterfinals of the Girls State Basketball Tournament at First Bank & Trust Arena on Thursday.

The day began with top-seeded Lyman losing to No. 8 seeded Corsica-Stickney and then concluded with No. 6 Harding County beating No. 3 seeded and defending state champion Bennett County. In between those games, No. 4 Ethan topped No. 5 Colman-Egan and No. 2 Parkston took down No. 7 Centerville.

Colman-Egan and Lyman will meet in the consolation semifinals at 11 a.m. and Centerville and Bennett County will follow. Corsica-Stickney and Ethan will kick off the semifinals at 5 p.m. and Parkston and Harding County will follow.

No. 8 Corsica-Stickney 65, No. 1 Lyman 56

The Jaguars trailed at the end of the first quarter but fought back and then pulled away late to stun the top-seeded Raiders.

It was a high-scoring first quarter that Lyman controlled. The Raiders led 11-4 with 4:19 to go in the opening frame and extended the lead to 20-12 at the end of it.

The Jaguars would then cut the lead to 20-18 a minute into the second with back-to-back threes. They stayed at arms length the rest of the quarter until Hadynn Johnson hit a three with 50 seconds left and that made it 29-29 going into halftime.

The two teams went back-and-forth in the third until the Jags went on a 7-0 run in the final two minutes to go up 48-40 going into the fourth. Lyman cut it to 55-52 with 2:45 to go but Remi Nelson converted an and-one to make it a five-point game with 2:25 to play. 

Kenzie Wagner made a three to cut the lead in half with 2:09 to go and then the two teams traded turnovers but neither team converted and eventually the Jaguars made seven free throws and kept the Raiders scoreless to pull away.

Corsica-Stickney shot 41.7% from the field and was 9-of-25 from three. The Jaguars were led by Braylee Bordewyk who had 26 points, five rebounds and five assists. Johnson had 15 points and Sophie Delange had 12 points.

Lyman shot 40.7% from the field and was 9-of-24 from beyond the arc. The Raiders were led by Jordyn Scott who had 28 points. Wagner had 12 points and seven rebounds.

No. 4 Ethan 51, No. 5 Colman-Egan 42

Ethan built a lead in the third quarter and was able to hold off the Hawks in the fourth quarter.

Neither team scored for almost four minutes to start the game. The two teams then traded baskets and Quinn Meyer’s 3-pointer with 34 seconds left in the first quarter gave the Hawks a 9-8 lead.

Colman-Egan extended the lead to 14-10 but then the Rustlers scored six of the next eight points to make it 16-16 with 1:34 to go in the first half. Rachel Klock gave Ethan the lead with 58 seconds left but then Meyer knocked down another three at the buzzer and gave the Hawks a one-point lead going into halftime.

The Rustlers scored the first five points out of halftime and then led 28-23 with 3:28 to go in the third. Ethan eventually led 34-27 going into the fourth.

The Hawks would then go on an 8-1 run that was capped off by a Josie Flatten 3-pointer and it was 35-35 with 5:17 to go in the game. The Rustlers responded with back-to-back baskets and then a three from Block gave them a 42-37 with three and half minutes to play.

Flatten scored a basket in the paint on the other end to cut the lead to three but then Sadie Mueller hit a corner triple with one minute left and that was the dagger for Colman-Egan missed a shot on its next possession and Ethan made its free throws.

Colman-Egan shot 39.1% from the field and was 5-of-23 from beyond the arc. Flatten had 22 points to lead the Hawks. Meyer had 10 points, 10 rebounds and four assists. Colman-Egan’s leading scorer Brynlee Landis was held to six points on 2-of-8 shooting.

Ethan shot 58.8% from the field and was 9-of-25 from three. The Rustlers had three players score in double figures. Klock had 17 points and nine rebounds. Mueller had 11 points and Taziah Hawkins had 12 points. 

No. 2 Parkston 46, No. 7 Centerville 39

A strong second quarter gave Parkston the lead and then the Trojans were able to make clutch baskets down the stretch to move on.

The two teams scored seven points in the first quarter. The Trojans then outscored the Tornadoes 10-4 in the second to take a 17-11 lead into halftime.

Each team scored more in the third as the Tornadoes held a 16-15 advantage to make it 32-27 going into the fourth.A 3-pointer from Izzie Eide cut the lead to 35-32 with 4:25 to go but then back-to-back buckets from Berkle Ziebart made it 39-32 with just over three minutes left. Lydia Austin converted an and-one but then Ziebart made another shot on the other end and Parkston knocked down its free throws to clinch the win.

Parkston shot 35.3% from the field and was 2-of-14 from three. The Trojans were led by Ziebart who had 26 points and seven rebounds. Keeara Oakley had 13 points.

Centerville shot 26.5% from the field and was 1-of-10 from beyond the arc. Eide led the Tornadoes with 22 points. Austin had seven points.

No. 6 Harding County 58, Bennett County 50

The two teams were tied at through three quarters and then the Ranchers outscored the Lady Warriors 24-16 in the final quarter.

Bennett County led 12-10 at the end of the first quarter and then Harding County outscored them 13-7 in the second quarter and took a 23-19 lead into halftime. Bennett County would hold a 15-11 advantage in the fourth to make it 34-34 going into the fourth.

Kaylen Padden hit a three for Harding County to tie the game with 6:30 to go. She then made a free throw and made a basket to give the Ranchers a 41-38 lead with 5:42 to play. Maci Wammen made a basket in the paint and made a free throw as well to stretch the lead to 44-38 with 5:15 to go.

Bennett County cut the lead to 50-48 with a 3-pointer from Reagan O’Neill with 2:48 to go. Wammen then knocked down two free throws and Wendt made a basket in the paint to give the Ranchers a 54-48 lead with just under two minutes to go. Reagan O’Neill made a shot in the paint to make it 54-50 but Bennett County was unable to score the rest of the way and the Ranchers came away with the win.

The Ranchers forced 37 turnovers and scored 28 points off of them. They turned it over 27 times themselves and gave up 10 points off of them. 

Harding County shot 28.3% from the field and was 5-of-18 from three. The Ranchers were 27-of-45 at the free throw line. They were led by Padden who had 15 points. Wammen had 12 points.

Bennett County shot 45.9% from the field and was 3-of-13 from three. The Lady Warriors were 13-of-23 at the charity stripe. They were led by Peyson O’Neill who had 26 points and 10 rebounds. Reagan O’Neill had 19 points.
