WATERTOWN – Sioux Valley had a tough time on offense in its quarterfinal matchup against Lennox at the Class A State Girls Basketball Tournament on Thursday as the Cossacks lost 42-28 to the Orioles.
The No. 4 seeded Cossacks went 0-for-16 from three and shot 27.3% from the field.
No. 5 seeded Lennox led 7-0 three minutes into the game. The Cossacks then scored their first basket with 4:36 to go in the opening quarter. The Orioles held an 11-4 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Lennox stretched the lead to 14-4 and then led 17-6 with 2:13 to go in the first half. The Orioles were up 17-8 at halftime.
Each team scored one basket in the first three minutes of the second half and then the Orioles scored five-straight points. They eventually led 26-14 going into the fourth quarter.
Lennox pushed the lead to 34-18 with 4:28 to go. The Cossacks would cut the lead to 37-27 with 1:18 to go, but it was too little too late.
Masey Top led the Cossacks with 10 points. Miley Keating and Kailey Cradduck each scored six points. Cradduck also had nine rebounds.
Lennox shot 34% from the field and was 2-for-17 from three. Bergan Musser had 13 points and nine rebounds to lead the Orioles. Tori Gerdes had 12 points and seven rebounds. Teagen Sturm had nine points.
The Orioles dominated the glass with a 40-27 advantage in rebounds. Sioux Valley had 21 turnovers that resulted in 16 Lennox points. Lennox had 15 turnovers and the Cossacks scored only four points off of them. The Orioles were 8-of-18 at the free throw line and the Cossacks were 4-of-7.
Sioux Valley will move into the consolation side of the bracket and will play No. 8 Lakota Tech at 11 a.m. on Friday. Lennox will play No. 1 Hamlin in the semifinals on Friday at 5 p.m.
