Ranger girls fall in State Tournament championship

MITCHELL – The Brookings Rangers girls varsity team came up short in the State Tournament over the weekend as the Rangers lost in the championship game on Saturday night.

The Rangers beat Rushmore in the quarterfinals and then topped Pierre Oahe in the semifinals. On Saturday night, Brookings lost to Sioux Falls for the third time this season.

The Rangers finished the season with a record of 20-4.

Thursday

Quarterfinals

Brookings 2, Rushmore 0

The two teams were scoreless in the first period and then the No. 2 seeded Rangers scored one goal in each of the final two periods.

Anna Rasmussen scored the first goal for the Rangers with 8:11 left in the second period. She was assisted by Miyah Foerster and Kinzey Grendler. Foerster scored a goal of her own with 8:20 left in the third and she was assisted by Grace DeVries.

Brookings outshot Rushmore 36-10. Rorii Quam had the shutout between the pipes for the Rangers.

The Rangers will play Aberdeen in the semifinals on Friday at 5 p.m. The Cougars beat Mitchell 3-1 in the quarterfinals on Thursday. Brookings beat Aberdeen 4-0 and 2-0 during the regular season.

Brookings 7, Pierre Oahe 1

The Rangers led 5-0 after two periods and then outscored the Capitals 2-1 in the third.

Grendler scored the only Ranger goal of the first period. It came on the power play with 5:43 left and she was assisted by Sawyer Triplett and Julissa Peterson.

Grendler scored again 15 seconds into the second and it was unassisted. Jordyn Anderson made it 3-0 with 6:19 to go in the period and she was assisted by Brooke Kruse. Grendler completed a hat trick 14 seconds later and this time she was assisted by DeVries. Triplett scored the final goal of the period with 27 seconds left on the power play. She was assisted by Foerster and Grendler.

Foerster scored a power play goal of her own with 8:58 left in the game and she was assisted by Triplett. Aubrey Stewart scored the lone goal of the game for the Capitals and it was unassisted. The final goal of the game came from Foerster on the power play again. It was with 4:30 to play and she was assisted by Peterson and Rasmussen.

Brookings had 29 shots and Oahe had 17. Quam was in net again and made 16 saves.

Saturday

Championship

Sioux Falls 5, Brookings 0

The Flyers scored two goals in each of the first two periods and then put an exclamation point on the win with one goal in the third.

Ragyn Peska scored the first goal 26 seconds into the game and she was assisted by Rebecca Harris and Brianna Marvici. Isabella Rigolizzo then made it 2-0 with a goal with 1:43 to go in the period. She was assisted by Halle Watson.

Peska scored again with 12:36 to go in the second and this time she was assisted by Emma Honner. Lucy Nelson pushed the lead to 4-0 with 58 seconds left in the second and she was assisted by Raegan Pfeifer and Halle Watson. Pfeifer scored the final goal of the game with 13:10 left in the game and she was assisted by Rigolizzo.

Sioux Falls outshot Brookings 36-20. Quam made 31 saves for the Rangers.
