BROOKINGS — A late-afternoon blaze destroyed a machine shed at 3026 Sunnyview Drive on Monday, but no injuries were reported among firefighters or others at the scene of the fire. The shed is owned by Kristina and David Bauer.
“We’ve pretty much got it knocked down and we’re in the overhaul process; we called the state fire marshal to come out here and help with the investigation,” Brookings Fire Department Chief Troy Hughes told The Brookings Register. “(We’re) just in the salvage and overhaul process now. There’s some active fire, but it’s not getting away from us — it’s kind of collapsed. We’re going to be here for a few more hours.”

He said the cause of the fire has not yet been determined, but that it started somewhere in the machine shed.
“There’s just a lot of stuff in there — vehicles and stuff plugged in and a lot of typical machine shop-type stuff,” Hughes said. “Everything that was in there is probably a total loss; it was fully involved.”
Hughes didn’t think there were any animals in the facility. There were, however, things such as a pickup, a tractor and other equipment, along with the business’s front office.

He noted that preliminary reports showed fire departments from Aurora, Sinai, Volga, Bruce, Elkton and Arlington provided mutual aid. The Brookings County Sheriff’s Office was on hand as well, as was Brookings Ambulance.
In closing, Hughes said seven trucks from the BFD helped battle the blaze, along with dozens of volunteer firefighters.
