Dolphin, Flier girls advance in region tournaments

The Deubrook Area and Flandreau girls basketball teams each advanced in their respective region brackets on Tuesday night.

The Dolphins beat Wolsey/Wessington in Region 2B and Flandreau topped Baltic in Region 3A. Elkton-Lake Benton lost to Clark/Willow Lake in Region 2A.

Region 2B

No. 3 Deubrook Area 50, No. 6 Wolsey/Wessington 33

The Dolphins shutout the Warbirds in the first quarter en route to quarterfinal victory.

Deubrook scored 12 points of its own in the first quarter. The Dolphins then led 22-10 at halftime. The lead extended to 37-20 at the end of the third. Each team scored 13 points in the final quarter.

Mataya Gouws and Peyton Trooien each scored 12 points to lead Deubrook. Carly Engelstad had nine points and Neely Gustad had six points.

Wolsey-Wessington was led by Raya Toupal and Kendal Uttecht who each had eight points. Payton Peterson had six points.

Deubrook is now 12-9 and will play No. 2 seeded Castlewood in Madison at Dakota State University at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Region 3A

No. 3 Flandreau 56, No. 6 Baltic 33

Flandreau led 14-2 at the end of the first quarter. It was then 34-12 at halftime and the lead was 43-22 at the end of the third. Flandreau outscored Baltic 13-11 in the final quarter.

Flandreau was led by Morgan Sheppard who had 25 points and eight rebounds. Addy Hammer had eight points.

Meredith Larson led Baltic with 12 points. Kate Bouman had 10 points.

The Fliers are now 13-8 and will play at No. 2 seeded Dell Rapids on Thursday at 7 p.m.

Region 2A

No. 3 Clark/Willow Lake 60, No. 6 Elkton-Lake Benton 30

The Cyclones led 12-4 at the end of the first quarter and the Elks could not fully recover.

ELB cut the lead to 23-19 at halftime but then the Cyclones outscored the Elks 16-5 in the third to go up 39-24 going into the fourth. The Cyclones laid the hammer down in the final quarter, outscoring ELB 21-5.

ELB shot 33.3% from the field and was 1-of-13 from three. Charlie Thooft led the Elks with 16 points. Sydney DeVries had seven points and Payton Kuehl had five points.

CWL shot 34.7% from the field and was 4-of-15 from three. Brynn Roehrich had a double with 16 points and 14 rebounds. Kamryn Nesheim had 13 points.

The Elks finished the season with a record of 7-14.
