Tough fourth quarter leads Bobcats to fall to Aberdeen Central

BROOKINGS – Aberdeen Central outscored Brookings 14-5 in the fourth quarter on Friday night and the Golden Eagles beat the Bobcats 51-40.

The Golden Eagles led 11-8 with 4:24 left in the first quarter and Julia Burns and Taylee Connot each made a three in the final four and a half minutes to give Brookings a 14-11 lead going into the second. Aberdeen Central then scored seven of the first nine points of the second to take a 18-16 lead. Neither team scored the next four minutes but a basket and a free throw put the Golden Eagles up 21-16. Brookings then got hot from three again as Taylee Connot and Burns each made another triple to make it 23-22 going into halftime.

Sloan McLagan tied the game at 28-28 with a basket with 4:39 to go in the third. The two teams then traded baskets the rest of the quarter before Kamdyn Borge hit a three to put Aberdeen Central up 37-35 going into the fourth.

Lauren Burckhard made two free throws 25 seconds into the fourth but Burns hit another three to make it 39-38 with 7:20 to play. Aberdeen Central then made three shots from beyond the arc in a span of four minutes and 35 seconds to give the Golden Eagles a 47-38 lead with 2:45 to play. Camryn Albrecht then hit a pair of free throws and Kenadi Withers made a basket to put the game out of reach.

Brookings shot 36.1% from the field and was 8-of-19 from three. Burns led the Bobcats with 13 points. McLagan had nine points and Taylee Connot had six points. Harper Hoek also had six points and Tessa Connot had four points. 

Aberdeen Central shot 34.5% from the field and was 6-of-22 from beyond the arc. The Golden Eagles were led by Withers who had 18 points and seven rebounds. Burckhard had a double-double with 12 points and 15 rebounds. Borge had 11 points.

The Golden Eagles had a 37-26 advantage in rebounds. Brookings had 21 turnovers and Aberdeen Central had 16. The Bobcats were 6-of-10 at the free throw line and the Golden Eagles were 7-of-9 at the charity stripe. 

Brookings dropped to 2-15 on the season. The Bobcats will host Yankton on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
