DENVER – South Dakota State won its fifth-straight game on Saturday afternoon as the Jackrabbits beat Denver 71-55.
SDSU went on an 11-2 run to go up 13-5 late in the first quarter. The Pioneers then cut the lead to 19-18 early in the second quarter. However, The Jacks outscored them 14-5 over the final eight minutes of the second and led 33-23 at halftime.
The Jacks increased the lead to 18 with a 10-2 run to start the third quarter. SDSU’s largest lead of the game came in the fourth when it went up by 26, but the Pioneers cut the final margin to 16.
SDSU shot 58% from the field in the win. The Jacks were 9-of-18 from three. Madison Mathiowetz scored over 20 points for the second time in as many games as she finished with 24 points to lead SDSU. Brooklyn Meyer had a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Hadley Thul chipped in 10 points.
The Jacks held the Pioneers to 30.2% shooting from the field and they were 9-of-33 from beyond the arc. Denver was led by Coryn Watts who had 26 points.
SDSU dominated the glass with a 39-25 advantage in rebounds. The Jacks had 22 turnovers that resulted in 28 points for the Pios. Denver had 13 turnovers. SDSU was 6-of-8 at the free throw line and Denver was 8-of-10.
Head coach Aaron Johnston won his 650th game on Saturday. He is one of 12 active coaches to reach that number.
The Jacks are now 22-6 overall and 12-2 in the Summit League. SDSU will conclude the regular season this week with two games. The Jacks will play at first-place North Dakota State on Wednesday. They’ll then host South Dakota on Saturday. SDSU moved into second place in the conference on Saturday after USD lost to NDSU.
