Meyer’s program record, Mathiowetz’s lay up push SDSU to victory in Tulsa

TULSA, Okla. — Brooklyn Meyer scored a program-record 44 points on Thursday night, but Madison Mathiowetz’s lay up with one second left lifted South Dakota State over Oral Roberts at the Mabee Center in Tulsa.

The previous program record for SDSU was 39.

There were 26 ties and 18 lead changes on Tuesday night. Neither team led by more than five points.

SDSU trailed 82-79 with 3:44 to go. Meyer then converted an and-one and made a lay up to give the Jacks the lead with just over three minutes to play. Ari Gordon tied the game for the Golden Eagles, but Madison Mathiowetz put SDSU back in front with an and-one with 2:13 to go. 

Gentry Baldwin knocked two free throws for ORU and Mathiowetz made a jumper to put SDSU up 89-86 with 1:51 to go. Gordon then converted an and-one on the other end and that made it 89-89 with 1:38 to play. 

Hilary Behrens gave the Jacks the lead with 1:18 to go with  her first basket of the game. Kayten Donley then made one of two free throws and Meyer made two free throws on the other end to make it 93-90 with 30 seconds left. Gentry Baldwin would then toss up a prayer from three that hit off the front rim and bounced in to tie the game with nine seconds to go. 

SDSU called timeout to advance the ball and Mathiowetz came off a screen set from Meyer and nobody was between her and the basket as she easily scored the game-winning lay up. Anna Trusty put up a desperation three at the buzzer that hit off the front rim and SDSU survived.

Both teams scored 26 points in the first quarter. SDSU then outscored ORU in the second and took a 42-41 at halftime. The Jacks would then have a 24-23 advantage in the third and were up 66-64 going into the final quarter.

Meyer was 15-of-22 from the field and 14-of-17 at the free throw line. Mathiowetz had 23 points and Hadley Thul finished with 14 points and seven rebounds.

SDSU shot 57.6% from the field and was 2-of-11 from three. ORU shot 48.4% from the field and was 11-of-20 from beyond the arc. The Jacks were 17-of-21 at the free throw line and the Golden Eagles were 20-of-27. SDSU had nine turnovers and ORU had six. The Jacks had a narrow 34-33 advantage in rebounds.

ORU had five players score in double figures, with Jalei Ogelsby leading the way with 19 points. Trusty had 18 points and Baldwin had 15 points. Gordon had 14 points and Donley finished with 12 points.

It was the Jacks’ 31st-straight win over the Golden Eagles. SDSU moved to 21-6 overall and 11-2 in the Summit League. It was only the second time this season that the Jacks won a game by less than 10 points. They beat Northern Iowa 59-57 on Dec. 10.

The Jacks will continue their road trip on Saturday when they play at Denver. Tip off is scheduled for 2 p.m. Central time.
