Cossack girls keep it rolling against Castlewood

CASTLEWOOD — The Sioux Valley girls’ basketball team used another solid second half to cruise to a victory on Tuesday night as the Cossacks beat Castlewood 73-49.

Sioux Valley had an eight-point lead at halftime and then outscored the Warriors 41-24 in the second half.

The Cossacks were up 15-13 at the end of the first quarter. It was then 18-15 one minute into the second and Sioux Valley went on a 9-2 run to go up 27–17 with 4:24 left in the first half. The Cossacks eventually led 32-25 going into halftime.

Talya Vincent hit back-to-back 3-pointers to open the second half. She made another one with 4:36 left in the quarter to make it 43-29. The Cossacks built up the lead to 52-35 going into the fourth. Liberty Trygstad scored seven-straight points for the Cossacks to start the fourth and then Vincent made another three to make it 62-37 with 6:08 to go. That was Sioux Valley’s largest lead of the game.

Sioux Valley shot 41.3% from the field and was 11-of-30 from three. Trygstad had 21 points to lead the Cossacks. Vincent had 18 points and all of her points came from beyond the arc. Kailey Cradduck had 11 points and nine rebounds and Amari Ward had eight points.

Castlewood shot 44.2% from the field and was 4-of-13 from three. Ava Ruml had 12 points to lead the Warriors. 

Castlewood won the rebound battle 31-30. The Cossacks had nine turnovers and the Warriors had 20. Sioux Valley was 10-of-13 at the free throw line and Castlewood was 7-of-10.

The Cossacks have now won six-straight games and are 17-2 on the season. They’ll host Garretson in the regular season finale on Thursday and then play in the Region 2A Playoffs  next week. Sioux Valley will be the No. 1 seed in the region playoffs and is the No. 3 team in all of Class A.
