Ranger girls go 2-1 over the weekend

The Brookings Rangers girls varsity team won two of the three games they played over the weekend.

The Rangers’ 10-game win streak came to an end on Friday night when they lost 2-4 to Sioux Falls. Brookings then bounced back with a 3-0 win over Watertown on Saturday and a 5-1 win over Mitchell on Sunday.

Brookings is now 16-2 on the season. Both losses have come to Sioux Falls. The Rangers will have this upcoming weekend off before closing out the season with three games Feb. 20-22. Brookings hosts Sioux Center on Feb. 20 at 8 p.m. and then plays at Pierre Oahe on Feb. 21 at 11:45 a.m. The Rangers will close out the regular season at Mitchell on Feb. 22 at 12 p.m.

Friday

Sioux Falls 4, Brookings 2

The Flyers outscored the Rangers 2-1 in both the first and third period. 

Sioux Falls scored the first two goals of the game. Raegan Pfeifer made it 1-0 with 14:22 to go in the opening period and she was assisted by Lucy Nelson. Aniston Murray doubled the lead for the Flyers a minute and 12 seconds later and she was assisted by Emma Honner. Sawyer Triplett got the Rangers on the board with 21 seconds left in the period. She was assisted by Ava Kahle.

Ragyn Peska put the Flyers back up by two just five seconds into the third period. She was assisted by Emma Honner and Rebecca Harris. Brookings answered 17 seconds later as Kinze Grendler found the back of the net. She was assisted by Anna Rasmussen and Audrey Andal. Honner put the game out of reach with a goal with just under seven minutes to go. She was assisted by Peska and Murray.

The Flyers outshot the Rangers 36-10. Rorii Quam made 32 saves for Brookings.

Saturday

Brookings 3, Watertown 0

Neither team scored in the first period and then the Rangers scored one goal in the second and two in the third.

Grendler opened the scoring with just over 11 minutes to go in the second. She was assisted by Miyah Foerster. Grendler scored again with 5:03 to go in the game and this time it was unassisted. Rasmussen scored the final goal of the game for the Rangers and she was assisted by Khloe Ziegeldorf and Maya Edmison. 

Brookings had a 40-20 advantage in shots. Quam had the shutout in net for the Rangers.

Sunday

Brookings 5, Mitchell 1

The Rangers led 3-0 at the end of two periods and were able to extend their lead in the third.

Grendler scored the first goal of the game again and this time it came with 8:47 left in the first period. She was assisted by Rasmussen and Foerster. Triplett made it 2-0 with 11:10 left in the second and she was assisted by Kahle. Rasmussen found the back of the net with 6:11 to go in the period and she was assisted by Grendler.

Brooke Kruse made it 4-0 with just under 12 minutes to go in the game. She was assisted by Grendler. Julissa Peterson pushed the lead to 5-0 with a powerplay goal 42 seconds later. She was assisted by Rasmussen and Triplett. Taylor Sorben avoided the shutout for the Marlins with a goal with 50 seconds left. She was assisted by Makenna Tronnes.

The Rangers had 41 shots and the Marlins had 24. Quam made 23 saves for Brookings.
