FLANDREAU – The Sioux Valley girls’ basketball team rallied in the fourth quarter to earn a 50-46 road victory over Flandreau on Friday night.
The Cossacks were down 46-41 with 3:19 to go in the game. Talya Vincent and Liberty Trygstad each scored baskets to cut the lead to one with 1:08 to go. Tenley Lebrun then turned it over for the Fliers and Kailey Cradduck converted an and-one to give Sioux Valley the lead with 34 seconds to play.
Liberty Trygstad stole the ensuing inbounds pass and the Cossacks called timeout. Cradduck would then miss two free throws with 33.1 seconds left and give Flandreau an opportunity to tie it or take the lead. Rona Streitz put up a shot in the paint with 11 seconds left and missed but she grabbed her own rebound and the Fliers called timeout. Rhegan Sheppard then had a chance to tie the game but her shot went in and out and Cradduck grabbed the rebound. She then hit two free throws to seal the win for the Cossacks.
Sioux Valley led 16-9 at the end of the first quarter. The Fliers then outscored the Cossacks 16-6 in the second and took a 25-22 lead into halftime. Each team scored 12 points in the third so the Fliers’ lead remained at three heading into the fourth.
Sioux Valley shot 33.3% from the field and was 5-of-20 from three. Cradduck had 25 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Cossacks.
Flandreau shot 36.7% from the field and was 3-of-9 from three. The Fliers were led by Morgan Sheppard who had 15 points and nine rebounds. Rhegan Sheppard had 11 points and five rebounds.
The Fliers had a 34-28 advantage in rebounds. Sioux Valley had 10 turnovers and Flandreau had 17. The Cossacks were 11-of-14 at the free throw line and the Fliers were 7-of-11.
Sioux Valley improved to 13-2 and plays at Deuel on Tuesday at 6 p.m. Flandreau fell to 8-6 and plays at De Smet on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
