VOLGA – Strong middle quarters lifted Sioux Valley over Dakota Valley 59-51 on Tuesday night at the Cossack Center.
Sioux Valley scored the first 11 points of the game and kept the Panthers scoreless for the first five minutes of the game. Dakota Valley then scored nine-straight points to cut the lead to two heading into the second. The Cossacks would then outscore the Panthers 14-4 in the second quarter and led 25-13 at halftime.
The Cossacks extended the lead to 34-17 with 5:21 to go in the third. That lead increased to 49-28 by the end of the third. The Panthers then tried to make a rally as they went on an 11-2 run to cut the lead to 51-39 with 3:37 to go. However, it was not enough as Sioux Valley ended up winning by eight points.
Sioux Valley shot 35.8% from the field and went 8-of-27 from three. Liberty Trygstad had 23 points to lead the Cossacks. Kailey Cradduck had 18 points and nine rebounds. Miley Keating had 11 points.
Dakota Valley shot 31.8% from the field and the Panthers were 0-for-13 from three. They had three players score in double figures with Aubree Worden leading the way with 14 points. She also had seven rebounds. Katie Betsworth had 12 points and seven rebounds. Alexa Verdoorn had 11 points and eight rebounds.
The Panthers outrebounded the Cossacks 36-32. Sioux Valley had 19 turnovers and Dakota Valley had 11. The Cossacks were 13-of-18 at the free throw line and the Panthers were 9-of-17.
Sioux Valley improved to 12-2 on the season. The Cossacks will play at Flandreau on Friday at 6:15 p.m.
