Interested in a Brookings School Board seat? File by Thursday!

BROOKINGS The Brookings School Board is moving quickly to fill the spot that opened when Keli Books tendered her resignation.

Books gave the board notice that she resigned her spot on the board after she accepted a position of vice president for advancement at the University of Nebraska at Kearney.

The board met via Zoom on Nov. 5 to approve Books’s resignation. Immediately following that meeting the board posted on its website a request for application to fill the spot.

Brookings Superintendent Summer Schultz said the process the district follows in replacing a board member is in line with South Dakota codified law.

The deadline to apply is Nov. 13. Brookings residents interested in applying for the seat on the board can go to www.brookings.k12.sd.us. At that site candidates should click “Employment” to get to the application site to fill the board vacancy.

Interviews with the prospective candidates will be scheduled on Nov. 14.

The board will meet in executive session on Nov. 17 to interview he applicants for the spot on the board. Schultz said that after coming out of executive session the board will announce its decision on the new board member after the executive session.

Books started her second term in July and her term would have ended in 2027. The candidate selected by the board will serve for a little over a year of Books’s term.

At the next school board election in either June or November of next year Brookings voters will decide who will serve the remainder of Books’s term. This means that the next school board election will include two separate school board races. Voters will decide on the three-year term on the board for the seat currently being held by Wes Tschetter and the one-year term to complete the remainder of Books’s term.

Schultz said this is in accordance with state law.
