BROOKINGS Brookings Rotary Club welcomed Randy Grimsley, development director for the Brookings Area United Way, to its Nov. 4 meeting.
Grimsley spoke about Brooking Area United Ways 70 years of impact on Brookings and the importance of this years annual campaign. Grimsley said that the stability of the Brookings Area United Way is something the entire community can be proud of, and in fact, United Ways impact is felt county-wide and not just within the city limits of Brookings.
Grimsley shared that one in three residents benefits from United Way at some point. United Way serves as a vetting ground for so many of the charitable and extra efforts that benefit a variety of groups across our community.
The annual campaign this year focused on the idea of Without Brookings United Way, whats at risk? Their video explored Brookings without United Way, which showed that many needs would go unmet. Grimsley noted the timeliness of the topic, considering recent events that have impacted food insecurity systems, and he encouraged everyone to contribute to the annual campaign. It is their major source of funds, and it runs from September into November each year.
The Brookings Area United Way has been below its fundraising goal for the last few years. Grimsley stated that it would be great to come together this year and ensure full funding ($1.2 million) as needs continue to rise. The Brookings Area United Way does not receive federal funding, but does rely on some state grants. This year, however, one large grant from the state was eliminated. Their number of donors is relatively stable, but the amounts can always fluctuate. The monthly payroll deductions Brookings Area United Way receives from some local employers are especially helpful.
