Duck-hunting options among topics at upcoming Brookings meeting

BROOKINGS The Brookings Wildlife Federation will host the states senior waterfowl biologist, Rocco Murano, at its Nov. 7 Infolunch at noon at the Brookings County Outdoor Adventure Center, 2810 22nd Ave. S.

Murano will talk about the latest waterfowl population data and wetland conservation. In addition, he will provide an update the status of a long-term study of how harvest regulations impact hunter participation.

Some say that waterfowl regulations are too complex so complex that the regulations may be keeping some prospective hunters from even trying the sport. Murano and the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Department are part of a four-year study in South Dakota and Nebraska to determine if simplified harvest regulations can increase duck hunter participation.

The problem for novice hunters is duck identification. The possible solution being investigated is called the two-tiered harvest system.

Two-tier means that hunters can select one of two regulation options when they purchase their South Dakota Migratory Bird Certification. The first option is the traditional six duck limit, with regulations on the harvest by species and sex.

The second option is a three-duck limit with no species or sex restrictions, commonly called the three splash option.

A buffet lunch will be available for a free will donation. The BWF is affiliated with the South Dakota Wildlife Federation and the National Wildlife Federation. The BWF is in its 45th year of supplying conservation information and activities to the Brookings community.
