Brookings Chamber to host annual Veterans Day program

BROOKINGS The Brookings Chamber of Commerce Military Affairs Committee will host the communitys annual Veterans Day Program on Nov. 11 at 9 a.m. at the Dacotah Bank Center.

All are welcome to attend this free event honoring our nations veterans.

Scott Kwasniewski will serve as master of ceremonies for this years program, which will feature musical performances by the Brookings High School Band, and a welcome message from Deputy Mayor Nick Wendell. Although the community has traditionally observed Veterans Day with a 24-hour vigil, that separate event will not be held this year.

This years veterans address will be given by David Earnest, dean of the College of Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences and professor of political science at South Dakota State University. Earnest brings a wealth of experience from his time working in political-military studies at the Center for Strategic & International Studies in Washington, D.C., and has written extensively on global systems, governance, and leadership.

The Military Affairs Committee will also present four awards during the program:

  • Officer of the Year
  • Non-Commissioned Officer of the Year
  • Soldier of the Year
  • Civilian of the Year

Veterans Day is a powerful reminder of the courage and sacrifice of those who have served, said Russ Chavez, chair of the Military Affairs Committee. Our committee is honored to carry on this long-standing tradition of gratitude and recognition in Brookings.

The committed extended gratitude to the Dacotah Bank Center for providing the use of the facility, the Brookings High School Band for its musical contributions, Wendell for his welcome message, and the many volunteers who help make this community event possible.
