ELK POINT Sioux Valleys season came to end on Thursday night as the No. 8 seeded Cossacks fell 49-14 to the top-seeded Elk Point-Jefferson Huskies in the Class 11B quarterfinals.
Sioux Valley held a 14-6 lead at the end of the first quarter and EPJ rattled off 42 unanswered points.
The Cossacks broke a 0-0 tie with 4:30 left in the first quarter as Braden Danzeisen ran it into the end zone from three yards out. Mitchell Guthmiller ran in the two-point conversion to make it 8-0.
EPJ answered quickly as Aiden Hammitt ran 65 yards to the house on the first play of the Huskies ensuing drive. The Huskies failed on the two-point conversion. Wyatt Hardt extended the lead for Cossacks with a 26-yard touchdown run. They failed on the two-point conversion so the score remained 14-6.
EPJs Brody Van Roeckel scored with 7:41 left in the first half and he ran in the two-point conversion to tie the game. The Huskies then took the lead when Levi Hansen threw a 66-yard touchdown pass to Hammitt to make it 20-14. Van Roeckel scored on a 20-yard run with 31 seconds left in the half and Hansen ran in the two-point conversion to make it 28-14 at halftime.
Beau Schmitz scored 45 seconds into the second half as he dashed to the end zone from 58 yards out. Owen Boyle made the extra point to make it 35-14. Later in the quarter Hammitt had a 36-yard touchdown and the Huskies failed on the two-point conversion so it was 41-14 with 5:51 left in the third. The final touchdown of the night came with 1:30 to play in the third as Luke Schmitz worked his way into the end zone from a yard out. Hammitt ran in the two-point conversion to make the final 49-14 as neither team scored in the fourth.
The Elks outgained the Cossacks 427-261. Sioux Valley had 176 yards on the ground and Hardt led the way with 124 yards on 22 carries. Guthmiller had 97 yards on 19 carries. Hardt was 5-of-13 for 85 yards. Tobin Squires had two catches for 27 yards and Guthmiller had a 35-yard catch.
Sioux Valley finished the season with a record of 5-5. The Huskies will face No. 4 seeded Deuel in the semifinals next Friday. The other 11B semifinal will be between No. 2 St. Thomas More and No. 3 Clark/Willow Lake.
