Bobcats fall short in playoffs against Huron

HURON The Brookings football team came up just short in the quarterfinals of the Class 11AA Playoffs on Thursday night as the Bobcats fell 7-2 to Huron.

The No. 7 seeded Bobcats had the ball on the Huron 12 yard line with 11 seconds left and Gavin Anderson took off on a scramble. He made it to the two yard line and then fumbled and the No. 2 seeded Tigers hopped on it with five seconds to go. Huron then ran out the back of the end zone to run the clock out and that made the final 7-2.

Huron got the ball first and moved inside the Brookings 20 yard line. The Tigers faced a fourth and four and came up short and Brookings took over at its own 14. The Bobcats picked up one first down but then had to punt again.

Huron moved inside the Brookings 20 again but the Bobcats stopped them on fourth and 11 and took over at their own 14. It was 0-0 heading into the second quarter.

Brookings punted on the first play of the second quarter. This time the Tigers found the end zone as Anderson Porisch plunged over the goal line from a yard out to make it 7-0 and that score would stick until halftime.

Huron moved the ball twice inside the Bobcat 20 yard line in the second half and each time the Tigers turned it over on downs. Brookings took over at its own 11 to start the final drive.

Brookings finished the season with a record of 5-5. Huron will host No. 3 seeded Pierre in the semifinals next Friday. The other Class 11AA semifinal will be No. 4 Sturgis at No. 1 Yankton.
