BROOKINGS A man from White will be spending years in prison following his sentencing in a case stemming from a March 2024 assault in Brookings involving a then 27-year-old woman in her home.
Brady Glazier, 35, was sentenced on Oct. 27 by Judge David Wheeler to 15 years in prison after Glazier pleaded guilty in September to aggravated assault and first-degree burglary. According to information from the Brookings County States Attorneys Office, the judge noted that retribution and deterrence outweighed Glaziers rehabilitation.
Per previous reporting in the Brookings Register and States Attorney Dan Nelson, the March 2024 incident wasnt Glaziers first with the woman. At the time of that assault, he was on parole for an assault on Oct. 31, 2019, at a Brookings residence that also involved her. Glazier had received a 15-year prison sentence, with five years suspended, in the older case.
In the March 2024 assault case, Nelson said Glazier is not eligible for parole and must serve all 15 years in addition to the remaining seven years that was imposed with the revocation of the parole from the October 2019 assault.
The victim displayed tremendous courage throughout this entire case, Nelson told the Brookings Register in a statement. She survived the violence perpetrated by Mr. Glazier and stood strong during her testimony against him. Brookings County is safer because of her strength.
He continued, Im thankful our States Attorneys Association lobbied the legislature to enhance the laws regarding violent felonies. Beginning in July of 2023, the law requires offenders convicted of violent felonies to serve 100 percent of their prison term without the possibility of parole. This change in law significantly increases the amount of time Mr. Glazier will serve.
In South Dakota, aggravated assault is a Class 3 felony, punishable by up to 15 years in prison, a $30,000 fine, or both. First-degree burglary is a Class 2 felony, punishable by up to 25 years in prison, a $50,000 fine, or both.
