VOLGA It was a tough night for the Sioux Valley volleyball team on Tuesday as the Cossacks were swept by Chester at the Cossack Center.
Chester, who is the No. 1 ranked team in Class B, dominated the first and third sets and won a close second set. Sioux Valley head coach Jill Vincent said Chester does everything well and does not have a weakness.
Theyre really fundamental. They can dig anything up, theyre scrappy at the net, they can get kills, they can jump out of the gym, they hit over our blocks or around them. Theyre just really, really smart, Vincent said.
Chester jumped out to a 9-4 lead in the first set. The Cossacks cut the lead to 14-8 but the Flyers then went on an 8-0 run to go up 22-8. They then scored three of the next six points to win the set 25-11.
It was 7-7 in the second set and Sioux Valley scored two-straight points to go up 9-7. Chester then scored three-straight to gain the lead but Sioux Valley went on a 4-1 run to go up 13-11. The Flyers tied the game again at 13-13 and then the two teams traded points until it was 18-18. Chester then gained the upperhand and led 22-21 and scored three-straight points to win the set and go up 2-0.
Vincent thought her team played a lot better in the second set and she credited that to playing with confidence.
I think we played fearless [in that set]. They made a couple mistakes, which allowed us to get on a run a little bit and helped us out. But playing fearless is what is going to get you more places, Vincent said.
Chester opened the third set with a 10-0 run. That lead extended to 15-2 and the Flyers eventually won the set 25-9.
The Cossacks had 18 kills and 53 digs as a team. Lacey Langland and Emma Gorvin each had five kills. Gorvin had seven digs and Langland had six digs. Talya Vincent had 12 digs and Liberty Trygstad had eight digs. Machela Gerasch had 11 assists and five digs and McKinley Schwab had five assists.
The Cossacks finished in second place at the Milbank Tournament over the weekend. They swept Mobridge-Pollock, Milbank and Milbank before losing to Groton Area in the championship match.
Vincent said she feels good with where her team is at because of how they looked in the tournament.
Were coming off of the Milbank Tournament feeling good. We got a couple of wins while we were there and I think that gave us some confidence with some things that we know we need to work on. But weve been improving all year and I think that shows up on a night like tonight, Vincent said.
Sioux Valley will close out the regular season next week. The Cossacks will host Garretson on Monday and then play at Elkton-Lake Benton in the regular season finale on Thursday.
Vincent said she wants to see her team
I just want us to be disciplined and know what they’re doing with the ball and play with some confidence, because every once in a while we lose our edge. We need to play with that confidence, Vincent said.
