Two-vehicle crash injures Brookings, Bruce residents

BROOKINGS COUNTY Three people were taken to hospitals following a two-vehicle, nighttime crash on U.S. Highway 14 between Brookings and Volga on Oct. 17.

The incident occurred at 11:43 p.m. at the intersection of U.S. 14 and 466th Avenue, according to the Brookings County Sheriffs Office. It involved vehicles driven by Delane Moe, 69, of Brookings and Ava Vande Weerd, 20, of Bruce.

Moe sustained serious, life-threatening injuries and had to be extricated from his vehicle. He was taken to Brookings Health System by ambulance, then transferred by CareFlight Ambulance to a Sioux Falls hospital. The sheriffs office said he remained in critical condition on Oct. 20 and was being treated for broken bones and other internal injuries.

Vande Weerd and her front-seat passenger were taken to Brookings Health System for an evaluation of their injuries. In total, there were seven people in Vande Weerds vehicle at the time of the crash.

Through an investigation on scene and witness statements, it was determined that a 1993 Buick Electra, driven by Moe, was traveling southbound on 466th Avenue and came to a stop at the intersection of (U.S. 14), Assistant Sheriff David Biteler wrote in a news release. After the stop, Moe continued onto (U.S. 14), into the path of the 1995 Ford Centauro, driven by Vande Weerd, which was west bound.

The sheriffs office is continuing to investigate the crash. Responding agencies were ambulance services from Arlington and Brookings along with the Volga Fire Department.
