‘No Kings’ demonstration draws hundreds to Brookings

BROOKINGS “This is what democracy looks like,” was the chant heard through bullhorns on Saturday afternoon at Hillcrest Park in Brookings.

Despite cool and windy weather, nearly 600 people turned out in support of the local “No Kings” demonstration. The event, which was sponsored by the group Brookings Indivisible, was one of more than 1,500 demonstrations held across the U.S., many of them were promoted by local chapters of Indivisible Project, whose website states that it’s a nonprofit organization formed to assist citizens in several areas of political activism.

These recent demonstrations were intended to protest what many consider to be overreach by the administration of President Donald Trump in domestic and foreign affairs. The Washington Post reported that more than seven million people came out for rallies nationwide and that the rallies had peaceful, mostly upbeat, almost festive atmospheres.

Plenty of American flags were visible around the country as well as in Brookings, along with the now-common giant, inflatable animals.

No arrests were made in connection to rallies in New York City, Washington, D.C., or Los Angeles. The Brookings event did have six officers from the Brookings Police Department keeping a watchful eye on the activities. Their presence was requested by the organizers.
