BROOKINGS First United Methodist Church is inviting people to join a study of N. T. Wrights “Surprised by Scripture: Engaging Contemporary Issues.”
The study will meet in the basement of FUMC on Sunday afternoons from 4 to 5:30 p.m. beginning Oct. 5, and concluding Nov. 16. Rev. Larry Ort, a retired Episcopal priest and former philosophy professor, will lead the discussion.
N. T. Wright is the former bishop of Durham in the Church of England (2003-10) and one of the worlds leading New Testament scholars. He is now serving as the chair of New Testament and Early Christianity at the School of Divinity at the University of St. Andrews. He has been featured on ABC News, Dateline NBC, The Colbert Report, and Fresh Air, and he has taught New Testament studies at Cambridge, McGill, and Oxford universities.
Wright shows the relevance of scripture for such engaging issues as evolution, the science versus religion debate, the ordination of women, ecology, the problem of evil, and political engagement. Wright invites us to examine our own minds and beliefs, reveals the relevance of the gospel for our troubled times, and calls us to radical hope.
