VOLGA Sioux Valleys homecoming game ended in heartbreaking fashion on Friday night as a 45-yard touchdown pass from Aiden Sievers to Oliver Fieber as time expired gave Deuel a 46-40 victory over the Cossacks.
Sioux Valley scored twice in the fourth quarter to tie the game after trailing 40-28, but Fieber caught the pass on the left sideline and broke two tackles to work his way into the end zone and disappoint all of the Sioux Valley fans.
Sioux Valley opened the scoring with a four-yard touchdown run from Wyatt Hardt. The two-point conversion was no good and the Cossacks led 6-0 with 6:29 left in the first quarter. Sievers then found Troy Jensen for a 14-yard touchdown and Fieber ran in the two-point conversion to make it 8-6 Deuel heading into the second.
The Cardinals would extend the lead with 7:39 to play in the first half as Sievers found Fieber for a 13-yard touchdown. They would not get the two-point conversion so the lead was 16-6. Sioux Valley answered just a minute and a half later as Hardt connected with Hunter Steinhaus for a 50-yard touchdown pass and a two-point conversion from Mitchell Guthmiller made it 16-14. Deuel would push the lead back to 10 before halftime as Sievers found Fieber for a 22-yard touchdown and Fieber ran in the two-point conversion to make it 24-14 at the break.
Guthmiller found the end zone from a yard out with 5:46 left in the third but a failed two-point conversion made it 24-20. Gavin Kloos then ran it in from eight yards out and a two-point conversion from Fieber made it 32-20 heading into the final quarter.
Hardt scored from three yards out and then ran in a two-point conversion to cut the lead to 32-28 with 11:18 to go in the game. Deuel would answer again though as Ryker Gauger had a 21-yard touchdown run and a two-point conversion from Carson Marko made it 40-28 with 8:27 to go.
Hardt found Guthmiller for a six-yard touchdown pass with 4:12 to play but the Cosscks failed to get the two-point conversion. Sioux Valley got the ball back and a 16-yard touchdown pass from Hardt to Kellon Tucker tied the game but once again the Cossacks were unable to convert on the two-point conversion.
Deuel then had 57 seconds to find the end zone to get the win and the Cardinals used every second.
