BROOKINGS The South Dakota State volleyball team rallied to win in five sets over Omaha on Thursday night at First Bank & Trust Arena.
The Jackrabbits trailed 2-1 after winning the first set and then won the final two sets to win their Summit League opener.
The two teams traded points in the first set as it was 7-7. The Jacks then went ahead 12-9 but the Mavericks would battle back and take a 19-16 lead. Then SDSU scored four-straight points to go ahead and later used a 5-1 run to win the set 25-23.
The Mavericks led 10-7 in the second set. SDSU pulled ahead 18-17 and then it was 20-20. Omaha then scored five of the next eight points to win the second set and even things up at 1-1.
The third set was back-and-forth as well as it was 14-14. The Mavs then scored three-straight points and later led 20-17. That lead would hold as Omaha took the third set 25-22.
It was a seesaw battle in set four as well and the Jacks trailed 11-10 and then went on a 4-0 run to go up 14-11. Omaha would tie things up at 19-19 but SDSU went on a 6-1 run to force a sudden death fifth set.
SDSU led 5-4 early in the fifth set. The Jacks then seized control with a 5-0 run to go up 10-4. Omaha cut the lead to 14-12 but then an attack error gave SDSU the match point and the victory.
SDSU had 66 kills and 73 digs as a team. Rylee Martin had a near triple-double with seven kills, 12 digs and 53 assists. Sylvie Zgonc had 16 kills and 11 digs. Hannah Klein had 17 kills and four blocks. Madison Burr had 10 kills and five blocks. Sydni Schetnan had seven kills and five blocks and Anna Ventling-Brown had nine kills. Joslyn Richardson had 16 digs and Rachel Wieber had 12 digs. Maggie Meister had eight digs.
SDSU improved to 7-3 and hosts Denver on Oct. 2 at 7 p.m.
