BROOKINGS The South Dakota State volleyball team split a pair of matches against Boise State over the weekend.
The Jackrabbits beat the Broncos in straight sets on Friday and then fell in five sets on Saturday. This closed out the non-conference portion of the schedule for the Jacks and they are now 6-3 on the season and will open conference play against Omaha on Thursday at 7 p.m.
Friday
SDSU 3, Boise State 0
SDSU led 8-5 in the first set and then the Broncos scored four-straight points to take the lead. It was then 12-12 and the Jacks went on an 8-2 run to go up 20-14. SDSU eventually won the set 25-18.
It was then 6-6 in the second set and the Jacks scored three-straight to go up 9-6. SDSU then led 19-13 and won the set 25-18.
SDSU jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the third set. The Jacks extended that lead to 16-9 and then won the set 25-22.
SDSU was led by Sylvie Zgonc who had 16 kills and four digs. Madison Burr and Hannah Klein each had six kills. Sydni Schetnan and Annalee Ventling-Brown each had five kills. Rachel Wieber had nine digs and Josyln Richardson had seven digs. Rylee Martin had 32 assists.
Saturday
Boise State 3, SDSU 2
SDSU jumped out to a 4-0 lead but Boise State would tie the set before the Jacks went on a 5-0 run to go up 15-10. The Jacks pushed the lead to 22-16 and then won the set 22-16.
The Jacks were up for the most of set two and but an 8-0 run for Broncos gave them a 25-21 victory and evened things up at 1-1.
SDSU led 21-12 in the third set and eventually won 25-15. Boise jumped out to a 7-3 lead in set four but the Jacks came back to tie things at 15-15. However, the Broncos pulled away and forced a fifth set with a 25-19.
Boise State led 9-5 in the fifth set and then scored back-to-back points to go up by six. The Jacks came back to make it 14-13 but the Broncos took advantage of the match point and won 15-13.
Zgonc led the Jacks again with 17 kills and 18 digs. Schetnan had 10 kills and nine blocks. Klein had 10 kills and Burr had six kills and seven blocks. Richardson had 18 digs and Wieber had 11 digs. Martin had 45 assists.
