‘Rally for Ron’ turnout was spectacular

On Sept. 13, the Brookings community came together in an incredible show of support for their friend and neighbor, Ron Flute, who was severely injured in a motorcycle accident this past August. While on his way home, a pickup pulling a trailer turned in front of him on U.S. Highway 14 near Brookings, leaving Ron with 12 broken ribs, multiple other fractures, and the need for several surgeries. His road to recovery will be long and challenging, but he is not walking it alone.

Just one month after the accident, a group of Brookings natives organized a benefit poker run in Rons honor. What began as a grassroots effort quickly grew into a powerful demonstration of love, generosity, and community spirit.

The event drew 327 registered riders, countless passengers, and supporters from across Brookings, neighboring towns, and beyond. Donations poured in from every direction monetary gifts, gift certificates, homemade quilts, gift baskets, handcrafted dcor, fire pits, food, and gear from local businesses. In total, more than 130 silent auction items, 60 raffle buckets, and a 50/50 raffle helped raise thousands of dollars to support Rons recovery.

The poker run concluded in Bushnell, where motorcycles and vehicles filled the main street as far as the eye could see a powerful sight symbolizing the strength of community and friendship. Riders and supporters traveled from Brookings, Flandreau, Sisseton, and many other towns to stand with Ron and his family during this difficult time.

The generosity shown will never be forgotten. Ron and his family are deeply moved by the overwhelming kindness and compassion extended to them.

A heartfelt thank-you goes out to the many businesses and individuals who made this event possible, including:

The Valley (Volga), 1481 Grille (Arlington), Back Alley Meats (Volga), Nicks Hamburger Shop, Jimmy Johns, Midwest Fresh (Volga), CCs Bar and Grille (Volga), Outlaw Graphics, Rays Corner, The Wagon Wheel (Bruce), Nunda Bar and Grill (Nunda), Buffalo Trading Post (Colman), Baltic Corner (Dell Rapids), Fat Boys (Flandreau), and The Bushnell Garage (Bushnell).

In addition, nearly every business in Brookings, along with countless community members, friends, and family, donated items and support. A dedicated committee of volunteers worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure the day was a success.

Because of their efforts and the incredible generosity of the community Ron can now focus on healing and recovery at home, surrounded by love and support.
