Bench ceremony planned Sept. 19 at veterans memorial in Brookings

BROOKINGS On Sept. 19 at 6 p.m. at the Lyle Bowes Veterans Memorial at 2915 22nd Ave. S, Rolling Thunder, Chapter 2, Brookings, members will dedicate their 18th POW/MIA bench. There are presently 16 dedicated benches in South Dakota and one in South Sioux City, Nebraska.

You dont have to be a biker or a veteran to be a member, Chapter 2 President Steve Wallen said. Its open to anybody who wants to educate the public on the POW/MIA issue.

The chapter mission statement notes that many American prisoners of war were left behind after all previous wars and (our mission is) to help correct the past and to protect future veterans from being left behind should they become prisoners of war-missing in action. We are also committed to helping American veterans from all wars.

One way the chapter helps is by supporting the 727th DAV Poker Run, which occurs on Labor Day weekend in Brookings and raises funds to help veterans get to their medical appointments.
